“Captain Jack” aka “Sparrow” is a 2012 Land Rover Discovery 4 (known as an LR4 in the United States) purchased used, completely stock at Land Rover San Jose shortly before Thanksgiving, November 2014. The name came from, well, y’all know about the drunk Captain Jack Sparrow, right? Let’s just say at times, my Land Rover acts as though he’s had a little too much rum…Land Rover owners know what I’m talking about.
Engine – 5.0 L gasoline DOHC V8 375hp @ 6500 rpm
Torque – 375 ft-lbs. @ 3500 rpm
Drive Train – Automatic locking hubs, descent control, Electronic Hi-Lo gear selection, Full-time four wheel drive, Mechanical center differential, Center locking differential, 6-speed shiftable automatic transmission
Suspension – Double wishbone front and rear suspension, Four-wheel independent suspension, Front and rear stabilizer bar
The truck went from a bone stock road machine to off-road warrior in a little over two years. The first modification was a decrease in wheel size from 19″ rims to 18″ rims, and added Cooper Discoverer AT/3 tires in size 275/65R18. The size of the calipers and space in the wheel well required the use of Johnson rods to add extra lift and 1.25″ spacers from Bora 4×4.
To balance out the heft on the bottom, a Baja Rack was installed on top. Besides, you can never have enough storage and when things get dirty, you want them outside the vehicle. This Baja Rack is the Standard Basket Rack designed specifically for the LR3 & LR4 and fits the contours of the sloped roof.
The Land Rover OEM Dog Guard is installed in the rear cargo area. It is used mostly to keep gear separated in order to prevent it from moving and sliding around while driving, but a drawer system would be more ideal in the future.
The rear of the truck is outfitted with a steal Kaymar bumper from Australia with a custom spare tire swing out. The swing out was designed so that the rear parking sensors will still operate.
A Warn winch with 9,500 lbs capacity sits front and center fitted with underbody protection. The Land Rover Warn Winch Kit with a Warn 9.5 CXP fits model years 2010 to 2013 and was specifically designed for Land Rover LR3’s and LR4’s with a tray that bolts directly onto the frame. A Land Rover front protection bar is also mounted in front of the grill.
While the winch kit is supposed to be bolt on and designed for this specific vehicle, it was a full day’s work with four people to get it installed. And if you’ve ever put Ikea furniture together… well, lets just say the directions for this install were picture perfect. Thank you to our amazing Northern California Land Rover Club members for the much needed help.
Sparrow will under go additional modifications prior to the Rebelle Rally so please stay tuned.
